How many numbers are there supposed to be on a credit card?

There are 16 digits for a credit card account. However, additional numbers are on the back side of the card. They include the last 4 digits of the account number and a 3 digit security code that is sometimes requested for security purposes.
If it’s an American Express Card it has only 15 numbers.
